The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the anti-kidnapping unit of the state police command, code-named C4i (See for eye), is being used by the state government to frame, arrest and assassinate some of the party leaders in the state with the aim of discrediting President Goodluck Jonathan and its governorship candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike.
The party therefore called on the Inspector General of Police (IG), Alhaji Suleiman Abba, to immediately disband the unit.
The C4i is a specialised police counter-terrorism unit set up in 2007 within the Rivers State Police Command during the short-lived Governor Celestine Omehia administration.
The initial operatives of the unit were trained in Israel to curtail the incidence of kidnapping which was then the prevalent in the state.
But the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign organisation in the state, Greater Together Campaign Organisation (GTCO), has described the allegation as laughable just as the police have said they were not aware of the allegations and have ordered investigation into the matter.
The Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee of the PDP Governorship Campaign Organisation in the state, Mr. Emma Okah, alleged that Governor Chibuike Amaechi and the APC were planning to use the unit to discredit notable PDP leaders, including President Jonathan and the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Wike.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, at the weekend, he said C4i had lost its essence, adding, “PDP has totally lost confidence in the C4i since, by their conduct and operation, the C4i is independent of the control of the Rivers State Police Command...
