Army Dismisses Allegation of Take-over of Govt

The Army Headquarters (AHQ) on Wednesday described as uncharitable the allegations that the military was planning a coup or take over of government in the event of a perceived chaos that might follow the general election.

The acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, while addressing journalists at a press briefing organised by the Directorate of Army Public Relations (DAPR) on the activities of the Nigerian Army, said it was uncharitable for anybody to insinuate such a thought.

“For anybody to say such a thing, that person is being uncharitable. Whoever made that statement is uncharitable to the military because we are an institution that are known to have supported this democracy,” Usman remarked.

This came as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, issued a strong warning to politicians, political groups and their supporters against violent incitement or perpetrating acts of violence to desist from such or be decisively dealt with during and after the general election.

Usman also frowned at those he described as “some disgruntled and misguided retired officers (who) have resolved to making spurious and unsubstantiated allegations against the Nigerian Army.
The army spokesman insisted that some of the allegations by the ex-servicemen were based on perceived cases of complain, partisanship and insecurity.

“The Nigerian Army cannot begrudge them on their right to freedom of speech. But, we make haste to observe that people must exercise their rights with equal sense of responsibility.

“The Nigerian Army has endeavoured to be fair to its personnel and retires its officers after due consideration to extant regulations considering such exercise and it is always ready to listen to anyone who has genuine grievances,” he said.

Therefore, Usman added, it is uncharitable for some retired officers to seek to destabilise and cast aspersion on the system.

“I therefore, urge you to disregard these individuals who seek to politicise developments in the Nigerian Army,” he appealed.
