Universal has potentially found another project for Elizabeth Banks, the actress-producer who made a splashy start as a director with the hit Pitch Perfect 2. I’m hearing that Banks is in talks to come aboard and develop to direct Red Queen, the Victoria Aveyard young adult novel. She and her Brownstone Productions partner Max Handelman would come aboard to produce with Benderspink, which has developed a script with Breaking Bad writer Gennifer Hutchison.
Red is the sweeping story of a 17-year-old common girl who lives in a world with a caste system that is based on blood. It’s a hierarchy where commoners are red blooded and serve the silver-blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. The protagonist is a Red, who scrapes by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own, and her once-latent magical power draws her into the dangerous intrigue of the king’s palace. It has the franchise appeal of novel series like The Hunger Games, in which Banks has played a supporting role.
