The Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on Friday described the June 12, 1993 presidential election as the precursor of the present democratic dispensation in Nigeria.
This is just as his predecessor, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, reiterated the need to honour the acclaimed winner of the poll, the late Bashorun MKO Abiola.
Obasa, in a statement on Friday, said without the election, it might have been difficult for Nigerians to enjoy full-fledged democracy.
According to him, it is imperative for Nigerians to celebrate the historic event and also reflect on its significance.
He said, “It was a major political event in Nigeria’s history and it deserves to be celebrated. It was the fairest, freest and most accepted election ever, not only in Nigeria, but also in the entire continent of Africa.”
While also speaking at Abiola’s residence in Ikeja, Lagos, during 22nd commemoration of June 12 organised the June 12 Movement in conjunction with Change Agents of Nigeria Network, Ikuforiji urged President Muhammadu Buhari to name Aso Rock after the deceased.
He said without the sacrifice made by MKO Abiola, the current crops of public office holders would have found no place in politics.
The former Speaker said, “President Buhari should declare June 12 as Democracy Day and name monument in each of the 36 states of the federation after MKO Abiola. Aso Rock should be change to MKO Abiola Rock because without MKO Abiola, there won’t be President Buhari in Aso Rock.”
Also speaking, the Convener of June 12 Movement, Mr. Wale Okunniyi, urged Buhari to nominate one of MKO Abiola’s family members for ministerial appointment in his cabinet as compensation for the price the acclaimed winners of June 12, 1993 presidential election paid for Nigeria’s democracy.
