The Federal Road Safety Commission and the tankers and haulage operators have called on the Federal Government to ban importation and use of second-hand tyres by vehicle owners in the country.
The stakeholders said there was an urgent need for renewal of petroleum tankers and other haulage vehicles through Fleet Acquisition Renewal Scheme with collaboration with financial institutions like the Bank of Industry or the Infrastructure Bank.
These were part of the plans of action recommended by a stakeholders summit on tankers and haulage operators organised by the FRSC on Monday in Abuja.
The haulage operators canvassed for training and retraining of tankers and trailers drivers in conjunction with the FRSC, stressing that there is a need for life insurance for all Nigerians for ease of compensation of citizens in case of loss of lives in road crashes.
The summit also called for modernization of law enforcement training and re-training, and logistics enhancement to ensure more effective discharge of duties.
