Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi
Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has expressed satisfaction with the media support he received ahead of last Saturday’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad in Kaduna.
The Eagles triumphed 2-0 against the resilient visitors, who created the better chances in the first half of the encounter.
Keshi said the media played a positive role ahead of the encounter, adding that it gave the squad, largely made up of new names, a big boost.
“I am happy this time because the media didn’t put pressure on the players. This time, we didn’t read about how opposing teams will demolish us. It really helped us, I must confess,” Keshi said.
“Let’s foster this unity and oneness so that we can claim our position back in Africa.”
In a similar vein, the former Nigeria captain said the team was never hesitant in playing the game in Kaduna, where the Eagles, under Keshi, have won all their games against Zambia (2-0), Burkina Faso (4-1), Ivory Coast (4-1) and Chad (2-0).
Reports in the media said some players were not happy with the choice of Kaduna as the match venue, citing security concerns in the northern part of the country and the poor conditions of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium pitch as reasons.
Captain Vincent Enyeama was issued a query by the Nigeria Football Federation over the issue but the enraged Lille keeper reportedly tore the letter in front of the federation’s officials on Monday.
Keshi said, “We’ve never had a better place to play football, Kaduna people have shown us true love and it’s a great thing we played the game here (Kaduna). That’s gone now; we should all try to make Nigeria a better country.”
