How to Thin Out a Wig to Look More Natural?

rellyrelly Posts: 15
Dear, have you ever encountered this situation—you bought a beautiful lace wig, but after wearing it, you feel that the hair is too thick and does not look natural enough? Don't worry! Today I will share with you some tips on thinning wigs, so that your wig is closer to your natural hairstyle and more comfortable to wear. Just like I told my friend, these super simple steps will ensure that you can easily get it done!

1. Prepare tools
Before we start, let's prepare some tools:
  1. Fine-tooth comb
  2. Wig scissors (it is best to choose special wig scissors with sharper blades)
  3. Spray bottle (add some water to avoid too dry hair when cutting)
  4. Head mold (if there is one, it will be more convenient to trim)
  5. A small towel (to prevent fallen hair from dirtying the table)
  6. After these tools are ready, we can start!

2. Comb the wig
First, use a fine-tooth comb to comb the wig and try to comb out all the hair. Especially if your wig is curly or wavy, you should comb it out gently first; otherwise, it will easily get tangled when cutting. Remember to start from the end of the hair and comb upwards to avoid pulling the knots of the wig.

If the wig is thick high density wig, or you are not sure how much to cut, you can trim it in sections first. Divide the wig into several layers, fix it with clips or hairpins, and trim it in two or three sections so that you can control the thickness more accurately.

3. Choose the part to trim
Next, it is the key step of thinning! There are two common methods:

A. Overall thinning
If you think the wig is too thick as a whole, you can start by trimming the bottom layer of the wig. Choose the part from the root to the end of the hair to trim; the goal is to reduce the overall volume of the wig without affecting its appearance. You can grab a small part of the hair with your hand and gently cut off a small amount of hair. It is best to only cut a small part each time you cut, so it is not easy to cut too much.

B. Partial thinning
If you only want to trim certain places (such as the top of the head or the side of the face), you can trim in batches. For example, if the top of the head is too thick, you can take out some hair and gently trim off the unnecessary parts. Remember, be careful when trimming; don't cut too much at once, and trim slowly until you feel the effect is natural.

4. The trimming angle is very important!
When thinning a lace wig, be sure to pay attention to the trimming angle! Don't trim directly horizontally, which will make the wig look like a "flat top" and very unnatural. You can try to cut it diagonally to imitate the growth direction of natural hair. Use scissors to trim gently, and don't cut too much each time, and gradually trim to the effect you want.

Some friends may use a razor to thin the wig. Although the effect is faster, you must be very careful to avoid cutting too thin or uneven areas. Scissors will be easier to control.

5. Check and adjust
After the trimming is completed, don't rush to put it on, check the trimming effect. You can wear the wig to see, or make some adjustments on the head mold. If you find that some places still look thick or unnatural, you can trim it again at any time.

In addition, the thinning wig may lose some hair during the trimming process. This is normal, but be careful not to cut too much; otherwise, it will affect the overall effect of the wig.

6. Final finishing
After thinning, don't forget to comb the wig again with a fine-tooth comb to ensure it is even and natural. If the wig is a curly type, you can gently use your fingers to push the curls apart to restore its bend. If it is a straight hair wig, spray some hairspray to increase the gloss and make the wig look healthier and more natural.

7. Care and maintenance
Thinned lace front wigs require more care. Wash the wig regularly and use special wig care products to avoid dry hair or tangles. Remember to comb it gently before each wear to avoid collision and pulling.
