As we grow older, we kind of notice that our bodies can’t really take as much punishment and neglect as they used to. It is not uncommon that people pick up a lot of bad habits due to exuberance of youth and then run into trouble 10-15 years down the road. The longer a habit is around the harder it is to drop it, but you should be aware that bad habits don’t necessarily mean things you are doing. It could very well be what you are not doing.
We were motivated to create a small list of things that can be ruining your chances at a healthy life.
Irregular or inadequate sleeping pattern
The science of sleep as a subject has been very popular in the last couple of years. Still, a lot of people are not aware of how many adverse effects not being properly rested can have on your health and life. Being drowsy makes you unproductive, forgetful, clumsy, agitated, amplifies stress, deteriorates your social environment and your ability to properly function within it. Chronic insomnia or chronic lack of sleep due to poor decision-making harms your immune system and makes you susceptible to all kinds of illnesses. Remember, 7-9 hours people!
Lack of water intake
Water makes up to 60% of our body weight, and we lose water through urination, breathing, sweating and so on, each day. The optimal water intake on a daily basis is 3 litres of fluids for adult males, and 2.2 litres for adult females. Getting even mildly dehydrated can have an impact on your health and ability to function properly.
Extreme or prolonged stress
We are all forced to endure certain levels of stress, but when things start getting out of hand it is time to put your health first. Work is the most common source of stress but not the only one. Stress management is a very important skill, since stress can be the cause of many psychological, as well as physical issues including anxiety, diabetes, asthma, gastrointestinal problems and so on.
Smoking (passive and active)
We are not even going to waste time explaining how smoking destroys your health. It is a very addictive habit and can be even more destructive if you are a passive smoker. Second hand smoke is extremely harmful and can cause many types of cancer, cause infertility and a bunch of other serious or less serious conditions.
Having a bad diet
Ok, we’ve all had our minds filled with ads full of delicious looking fast food which doesn’t provide our body with the kind of quality nutrition it needs. I’m not saying you should drop fast food altogether, sometimes you have to resort to it due to convenience, but be a food rebel every now and again, and start fitting in healthy treats for your body. See what your body lacks and adopt a diet that will make you feel good, energetic and healthy.
Nobody can fend for your health but you. If you do not start picking out bad habits, you are going to put your physical well being in jeopardy. Don’t allow a simple thing, like drinking enough water throughout the day, to get coffee drinks in the way of you having a healthy life.
