Employees of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have built a multi-purpose hall for members of the Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria (SCIAN) in Lagos state.
The facility is expected to be a major revenue earner for the physically challenged group. It was built by staff members of the central bank nation-wide, through their CBN Staff Alms Fund (C-SAF).
The fund was established in 2003 as a result of the need to address the nagging issues of begging and to support destitute in major cities in the country.
Speaking during the inauguration of the multi-purpose hall, the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele said the project was approved because of its potential to provide revenue for the association.
Emefiele, who was represented by the Director, Human Resources Department, CBN, Ms. Chizoba Mojekwu, put the final cost of the project at N40 million.
He commended the entire staff of the CBN for their magnanimous and selfless donations to the fund.
“Today, we have caught a glimpse of the impact of these contributions are making in the lives of people who need our help. There is no greater joy than knowing that you can make a difference in the lives of people,” he added.
On his part, the President, SCIAN, Mr. Obioha Ononogbu, said the purpose of creating the association was to promote effective rehabilitation, employment, welfare and the resettlement of spinal cord injured persons in particular and all other disabled persons. The centre is also to make persons with disabilities self-reliant, he added.
“The most critical challenge of the association presently is funding. This elegant edifice stands as an enduring legacy for the sustenance of this foremost rehabilitation centre,” he added. He also commended the CBN for the gesture.
