Jose Mourinho “will solve” Chelsea’s current form slump, his agent has told the BBC.
The reigning English champions are a lowly 15th in the table after six defeats in 11 matches — the worst start by defending title-holders in the Premier League era — and have already been knocked out of the League Cup.
Speculation has been rife that the Portuguese manager’s second spell in charge of London club Chelsea could be drawing to a close but his agent, Jorge Mendes, told the BBC: “Many people are saying these things but there is no chance (he will leave). He will solve the problem. He is the best.”
Chelsea eased the pressure on their beleaguered boss with a 2-1 home victory over Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League on Wednesday, although the winning goal — a brilliant free-kick from Brazil winger Willian — did not come until seven minutes from time.
Loyal fans at Stamford Bridge chanted Mourinho’s name throughout the game and Mendes said: “The reaction from the supporters tells you everything. They like him.
“Everyone, players, coaches, you have good moments and bad moments. It is impossible to find someone like him to solve the problem.”
Mourinho himself thanked Chelsea fans for their “amazing” backing after Wednesday’s match.
As well as dealing with the fall-out from Chelsea’s on-field form, amidst reports of a dressing-room mutiny, Mourinho has also received a one-match stadium ban for misconduct towards referee Jon Moss during Chelsea’s recent 2-1 loss at West Ham United.
He was sent to the stands during that match and the ban means he will miss Saturday’s game at Stoke City.
Mourinho is currently appealing against a separate suspended one-game stadium ban imposed upon him by the Football Association for criticising the referee after Chelsea’s 3-1 home defeat by Southampton last month.
He also faces legal action from Eva Carneiro, the former Chelsea doctor, after saying she was “naive” for treating Eden Hazard during the opening-day draw against Swansea.
Carneiro was subsequently dropped from first-team duties and has since left Stamford Bridge.
She is now taking individual legal action against Mourinho, as well as suing Chelsea, owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, for constructive dismissal.
