Golden Eaglets striker Victor Osimhen has equalled the FIFA U-17 World Cup goal-scoring record set by Frenchman Florent Sinama Pongolle and Ivorian Souleymane Coulibaly, who were top scorers in the tournament at Trinidad and Tobago 2001 and Mexico 2011 respectively with 9 goals each.
Osimhen scored his ninth goal at the ongoing Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute of the Eaglets’ 4-2 defeat of Mexico in their semifinal game, which kicked off 12am on Friday.
The striker has found the net for the Eaglets in all their games so far in the tournament.
He started with a goal in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over the United States of America on the opening day; followed it up with a brace in their 5-1 thrashing of hosts Chile; and scored Eaglet’s only goal in their 2-1 loss to Croatia in their last game in the group stage.
Osimhen continued his goal-scoring with a hat trick in the 6-0 mauling of Australia in the Round of 16; scored a goal when Eaglets beat Brazil 3-0 in the quarterfinal, before getting the last goal of the semifinal against Mexico on Friday.
With Nigeria set to meet Mali in the final on Sunday, Osimhen has the chance of setting a new record by scoring at least a goal in that match.
