The
Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS, has carried out the execution of
a second American journalist, according to a new video released
Tuesday.
The video purports to show the beheading of Steven Sotloff, a U.S.
journalist held hostage by the militants for more than a year.
The killing follows the beheading of James Foley, another U.S. journalists, in August.
ISIS, which seeks to carve out an Islamic caliphate in an expanse of
territory between Syria and Iraq, says the killings are in retaliation
for the U.S. air strikes on the group in Iraq.
The United States began air bombardment against ISIS after the group
took over large territory in Iraq, carried out gruesome execution of
civilians and threatened massacres of minority communities.
The group has been described as one the most brutal and blood-thirsty terrorist organization the world has ever seen.
ISIS has shown images of large scale execution, beheading of
civilians, women and children, who they group accused of belonging to
religions other than Sunni Islam.
The group hunts Shia Muslims, Christians and Yazidis.
Mr. Sotloff, 31, disappeared in Syria in 2013. He was shown in the
video of Mr. Fowley’s beheading, with a warning from ISIS that he too
will be killed if the United States continued with its air campaign.
The U.S. has continued since.
A militant in the latest video also threatens to kill a British hostage, according to Reuters agency.
In the new video, entitled “A second message to America”, a masked
figure is shown together with Mr. Sotloff, who is dressed in an orange
jumpsuit.
According to the BBC, Mr. Sotloff reads out a text addressed to U.S.
President Barack Obama saying: “You’ve spent billions of US taxpayers’
dollars and we have lost thousands of our troops in our previous
fighting against the Islamic State, so where is the people’s interest in
reigniting this war?”
The hooded man then speaks: “I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of
your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State… despite our
serious warnings,” he says.
“We take this opportunity to warn those governments that enter this
evil alliance of America against the Islamic State to back off and leave
our people alone.”
The video ends with the militant threatening to kill a captive who is claimed to be British.
