Parents, teachers and pupils of the Federal Science and Technical College, Ilesa, Osun State, have staged a peaceful march to kick against the poor living conditions at the school.
Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the intervention of the police prevented the march, which occurred on Wednesday, from degenerating into a crisis.
The protesters, who accused the school Principal, Mr. Chuks Onwusiri, of being indifferent to the plight of the pupils and their teachers, called on the Federal Government to remove him.
They also accused him of not providing the blazers they paid for their children about three years ago.
The Chairman of the Parent-Teacher-Association, Mr. Olufemi Kolade, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the living conditions in the school were terrible.
Kolade also said that the institution lacked other social amenities.
He said, “The situation at the Federal Science and Technical College, Ilesa is very bad. There is no electricity supply; pupils eat dinner in the dark and they go outside the school premises to fetch water.
“We are paying for services not rendered. Parents paid for blazers and the authorities of the school did not supply them. We are calling for the removal of the principal. The school has never been in this sorry state.”
One of the teachers, who craved anonymity, said the school clinic was in a very poor condition.
According to him, pupils can easily contract diseases in the clinic instead of receiving treatment there.
She said, “It will be good if the President can send somebody to the school to just see how the pupils are living. It is terrible. The ministry of education cannot do anything because the principal is in directorate cadre, so none of them can really question him.”
Efforts to speak with the principal were unsuccessful, as calls put across to his telephone did not connect. He also did not respond to a text message sent to his telephone as of 7pm on Thursday.
