Following an alleged assassination attempt on the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, by suspected gunmen in Abuja on Tuesday, a group called “Izumunna” on Wednesday said it would hold President Muhammadu Buhari, responsible for any harm that befalls the deputy senate President.

“We want to make it clear that we will hold the present administration liable if anything untoward happens to this great Igbo son.”

“Izumunna”, an Igbo socio-cultural group, in a statement made available to journalists in Jos and signed by its President and Secretary, Elvis Chukwu, and Ugo Ihekuna, condemned the attack and said it was uncalled for.

“Izumunna condemns this barbaric act, which is another indication that Ndigbo are not getting their fair share from the Buhari administration.”

The group alleged that the attack was carried out to cripple Igbo speaking nationals in the Buhari-led Government.

“The Deputy senate President is the only highest ranking Igbo man in the present administration and was about to be eliminated. An attack on Ekweremadu is an attack on Ndigbo both at home and in the Diaspora.”

The group threatened to stage a protest if nothing was done to protect the deputy senate President.

“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to order the IGP to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring those responsible for this act to books. We make bold to say that if any action is not taken, let nobody hold us responsible for the possible backlash.”

The group expressed disappointment that Igbo speaking people had not been fully given the opportunity to participate in the present administration.

“Ndigbo are yet to come out with the stark reality that they are being relegated in the scheme of things, especially with the recent allocation of ministerial positions.”
