Barcelona had even more reason to smile following their 6-1 demolition of Roma after it replaced Real Madrid as Europe’s top all-time goalscorers.
The Catalan giants followed up on their memorable 4-0 win over their arch rivals on Saturday with a comfortable victory against their Italian opponents in the Champions League.
And the goals from Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Adriano on Tuesday evening saw Barca surpass Real as Europe’s most prolific club.
After Adriano netted the home side’s sixth goal of the match, Luis Enrique’s men moved up to 1,037 goals in all European competitions – one ahead of Real.
It capped off a perfect evening at the Nou Camp, which also saw Messi start his first game for Barca since recovering from injury.
But there’s cause for optimism for Real fans, though, as they can regain top spot should they score more than one goal against Shakhtar Donetsk in yesterday’s game.
Opta has released the list, which also features Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, Serie A powerhouses Juventus and Belgian outfit Anderlecht in the top five.
The Premier League is represented by Liverpool and Manchester United in the top 20 – with Celtic also featuring on the list.
Seventh-placed Liverpool, managed by Jurgen Klopp, have notched 612 goals and are the highest-ranked English team.
United are four places below their arch rivals in 11th place with 594 European goals, but could add to their tally when they face PSV, who have 503 goals, in yesterday’s Champions League.
