PTA celebrates teachers, rewards hard work

Former Texas, United States lawmaker, Solomon Ortiz, it was who said that, “Education is the key to success in life.” He added that, “teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.”

This perhaps, was what prompted the executives of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Yaba, Lagos, to recently fete both academic and non-academic staff of the institution.

At the event, various gift items were presented to staff members with those whose students performed optimally in their respective subjects carting home special prizes.

Some of those whose efforts were praised were Mr. Jamiu Oyelami (best science teacher); Mr. M. Ajetunmobi, (best technical teacher); while Mrs. Funmilayo Raphael won the best non-academic staff prize.

In her remarks, chairperson of the association, Mrs. Oby Igwillo, said the PTA recognises the important role of teachers in both human and national development, thus its resolve to celebrate and reward their efforts.

“Teachers are the group that train children to become responsible individuals in life. Once they get it right, the society becomes better. That is why we, as one body decided to be celebrating them together with their non-teaching counterparts on yearly basis so they can do more,” Igwillo.

“The PTA is a very strong stakeholder in the assignment of every school and we hold our teachers in high esteem. Teaching is still a noble profession, and we want the government to recognise this and do more in the area of teachers’ remuneration.

She informed that the ongoing hostel project would be completed before the year ends, adding that, “We believe the hostel facility will greatly ease the accommodation problem facing the college when completed,” she added.

Principal of the school, Rev. Chris Ugorji added, “On our part, the welfare of our teachers is paramount to us, and that is why we are doing everything possible to ensure that they are comfortable. The growth and development of every nation is dependent on the manpower that is physically, mentally, professionally and psychologically sound. All of these cannot be achieved without the noble teaching profession, and so teachers must be well taken care of.”

He appealed to the PTA to expedite action in order to promptly complete the 1000-bed space female hostel, as that the college was compelled to convert three classrooms to hostels; while the college’s multipurpose hall is now serving as classrooms.
