The police authorities released N500, 000.00 yesterday for treatment of the cop, Godwin Ehabere, shot by armed robbers who invaded Agbara Estate last week.

Ehabere, a corporal in a special unit of the police called MPOL (Mobile Police), was critically injured and taken to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) with bullets lodged in his body. LUTH doctors asked that the family pay N43, 000 for scanning so the bullets could be extracted from his body. After his uncle, Mr. Victor Iyoha, a plumber, paid the sum, he was again asked to pay additional N70, 000 for another scanning.

LUTH spokesman, Kelechi Otuneme, dismissed the claim of the demand on the family for money to treat Ehabere, saying the hospital knew that it was the police authorities that were being expected to foot the bill. He said the policeman was undergoing a scan at MRI suite for further tests. He said yesterday that the result of the scan was out and it was what would determine the exact location of the bullets.

Buttressing his statement that Ehabere could not have been denied treatment on account of non-payment, Otuneme said the hospital’s chief security officer interrogated him when he was brought to LUTH and it was ascertained he is a police officer.

Iyoha, his maternal uncle, confirmed last night the receipt of the money. A senior police officer was at LUTH to see Ehabere and to hand over N500, 000 to Mr. Iyoha.
