Winner of Nigeria Stock Exchange essay competition emerges

A student of Sacred Heart College in Apapa, Lagos, Chiamaka Nwajiaku, Apapa, has won the first prize at the the Nigerian Stock Exchange 2015 Essay Competition for Senior Secondary School Students.

She emerged winner ahead of more than 4,000 students across the country and went away N500,000 in scholarship fund for university education, N250,000 worth of equity investment and a laptop.

Vivian Aneke of Government Day Secondary School, Gwagwalada, Abuja and Kindness Jehu of All Saints College, Gombe emerged first and second runner up respectively.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Oscar Onyema, at the awards ceremony which held on Tuesday in Lagos said the Exchange remains committed in the nation’s financial literacy and
inclusion programme.

“Since it began in year 2000, the annual NSE Essay Competition has inspired over 20,000 young people in over 7,000 secondary schools across Nigeria to showcase what they have learned about financial and capital markets,” Mr. Onyema said.

He also expressed satisfaction with the number of participants in the 2015 NSE Essay Competition, saying “this year, we have been truly impressed by the quality of entries, pedigree of schools and the
diversity in the submissions.

“We believe that the impact of this initiative is commendable as we continue to record high levels of participation, increased interest and awareness of the dynamics of the stock market”.

The founder, LEAP Africa, Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli, in her keynote, asked “young people should learn to take responsibility and have a life of service.”

She also commended NSE for the initiative and exposing Nigerian youth to the intricacies of financial management and wealth creation.

The NSE Essay Competition is one of the Exchange’s financial literacy and inclusion initiatives aimed at building a financially savvy generation.
