There is panic among residents ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Bayelsa State following the killing of a deputy Ward Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Diseye Dickson.
The Nation gathered that Dickson was murdered on Wednesday by gunmen who dressed in military uniform and stormed his community in Odi, Kolokuma/Opokuma local government area of the state.
The state leadership of the APC claimed that the gunmen that killed its Odi Ward 1 deputy Chairman were Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) thugs.
Dickson was reportedly shot dead at about 11:00pm by the gunmen.
It was learnt that the assailants numbering eight invaded the community to abduct Chief Watson Ogoriba, the elder brother to a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Warman Ogoriba.
But the mission reportedly failed as their target escaped and immediately contacted the police.
The gunmen were said to have killed Dickson while trying to shoot their way out of the community.
A source from the community who spoke in confidence said: “It was the case of failed kidnap attempt and it could also be political. Everybody knows that Warman is the leader of the APC and his opponents may have decided to abduct or even assassinate his brother so as to weaken him.”
