The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has shut down two jetties at Port Harcourt and Calabar.
The affected jetties, according to a statement by the spokesperson of the agency, Hajia Lami Tumaka Magcobar, included Manufacturing Limited jetty at Reclamation Road, Port Harcourt and Shoreline Logistics Limited at Old NPA Port, Marina Road Calabar.
She said the jetties were shut down for failing to comply with the provisions of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code after repeated warnings to ensure compliance failed to elicit the desired result.
This brings the number of jetties shut in the country to three.
Tumaka said, “In a bid to ensure 100 per cent compliance with the provisions of the code, the agency has instituted stringent measures against defaulting facilities, having worked hard to attain its present position of over 80 per cent compliance with the nation’s 129 facilities.
“The shut facilities will remain closed until their managers correct the identified deficiencies and pay a prescribed fine before they will be reopened for business.”
She said the agency was exercising its powers as the designated authority for the implementation of the ISPS code.
The NIMASA had last week shut the Obat Oil and Petroleum Limited Jetty at Ibafon for non-compliance with the ISPS code.
“The exercise, which is a continuous one, has a target of achieving 100 per cent compliance that will guarantee the security of ships and port facilities especially in a period when terrorists’ activities have been heightened,” Tumaka added.
