One of the candidates in the September 30 NFF elections, Amanze Uchegbulam has challenged delegates to the forthcoming elective congress to eschew sentiments and elect the best leaders for Nigerian football as that was the only pointer to the growth of the game in the country.
Uchegbulam who is Chairman of the Imo State Football Association told Sports Vanguard that the attitude and voting pattern of the delegates must not be like the typical Nigerian politicians who are usually swayed by considerations other than merit.
He justified his stance. “The quality of the FA will determine the quality of football in the country. It is pertinent to also know that the growth of Nigerian football is in the hands of the delegates. That is why I am urging them to do a good job.”
He admitted that he is one of the candidates for the NFF Presidency but was quick to add that he was not in anyway going out of his way to achieve victory at the poll.
“If they feel I not good for the job, let the best carry the day,” Uchegbulam said, adding, “it is not a do or die affair.”
He insisted that delegates must consider the candidates’ quality and knowledge of the game before casting their votes.
He said after all they have have passed through in recent times, delegates must vote for an FA that will fight for the game and for the autonomy of the FA. “We have the opportunity to reposition the game in the country and indeed, we must usher in a new era that wil truly see the FA independent even while recognising the role of government in the affairs of football.”
