The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has stated that it is fully behind President Muhammadu Buhari in the ongoing fight against Boko Haram insurgency in the North East.
The spokesperson of the party, Olisa Metuh, made the disclosure at the PDP National Secretariat, Abuja on Friday when he received a delegation from the Northern Youth Network, NYN, who paid him a courtesy call.
Mr. Metuh, while responding to a comment by the leader of the delegation, Mike Msuaan, that the APC-led government had apparently failed to fulfill its promise of ending insurgency, said the PDP deliberately refused to criticize the APC on its promise to end insurgency within a specified period.
“We are completely in support of the government in the war against insurgency,” he said.
The PDP spokesperson said the decision to support the government on the fight against insurgency was hinged on the fact that “the insurgents were not just fighting Buhari, APC or PDP but all Nigerians”.
“We must send a message to those trying to divide us that we are united and remained one in the fight against insurgency,” Mr. Metuh said.
He however said the PDP would continue to criticize the government constructively “where they go wrong”.
The spokesman said while the PDP was in power, it gave all Nigerians a sense of belonging.
He alleged that Nigerians were crying of selective application of policies and programmes and called on the Nigerian government to “note and address such complaints”.
INEC should conduct all rerun elections immediately
Mr. Metuh also reacted to recent “gale” of cancellation of elections by some National Assembly members and senators, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to immediately conduct elections in areas where rerun were ordered.
He said delay in conducting the rerun elections could deny many communities in Nigeria to have representations when key decisions are taken, especially with regards to ongoing budgeting processes.
“INEC should strive to hold elections within 30 days where possible in areas where rerun were ordered,” he said.
Mr. Metuh also said the PDP was confident of winning all the seats it lost in the last election as “Nigerians have now seen the mistake of voting for APC”.
Commenting on the stalemated Bayelsa governorship election, the PDP spokesperson said the party “would never allow anyone to take its right”.
He said where INEC and APC fail to ensure credible election, the PDP and the people of the state would ensure that the election is credible.
Mr. Metuh also commented on ongoing agitations for the creation of an independent Biafra, saying Nigeria was a divine creation that cannot be divided.
“People should keep faith in the country. No part of this country can survive on its own.
“God brought us together; no man can tear us apart,” he said.
