Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Vincent Obette, told SaharaReporters today that Mr. Kanu has not yet been released from jail.
Mr. Kanu is the director of Radio Biafra and the leader of the separatist Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), both of which support the separation of southern Biafra territories from the Nigerian federation. Mr. Kanu has been held by the Nigerian authorities since October 14th, for charges of conspiracy, incitement and terrorism. During most of his detention period, he was denied medical and legal assistance according to his supporters.
“[Mr. Kanu] has been discharged but not released” from custody, his lawyer confirmed. He added, “there are no [legal] charges on his neck anywhere in the world.”
SaharaReporters has previously reported that the Department of State Security (DSS) elected to withdraw their case against Mr. Kanu for criminal conspiracy and ownership of an unlawful society.
Mr. Obette also told our SaharaReporters correspondent that there will be a court hearing on a related matter tomorrow at the Federal High Court in Abuja where they “hope to conclude the matter.”
