1. Nigeria yesterday marked its 56thIndependence anniversary amid messages of hope from the international community. World leaders used the opportunity to pledge their support to Nigeria in her fight against terrorism and corruption.
2. President Muhammadu Buhari has once again assured Nigerians that his administration is working towards providing a lasting solution to the country’s many challenges.
Buhari, who addressed the nation in her 56th Independence Anniversary, noted that his government was currently working round the clock to end the suffering of Nigerians.
3. Governor Seriaki Dickson of Bayelsa State has stated that the state does not have the financial strength to offset the outstanding salaries of civil servants in the state. He said due to the dwindling revenue, the state does not have enough in its purse to pay full salaries at the moment.
4. A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Olusola Oke, has decamped to Alliance for Democracy.
Oke told his supporters from the state’s 18 local government areas at his residence in Akure, that his defection was necessitated by an alleged injustice perpetrated by some leaders of the APC during the primary.
5. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Saturday said despite her many challenges, Nigeria is getting better.
Obasanjo told newsmen after a lecture organised by the Youth Fellowship of the Owu Baptist Church, Totoro in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to mark the nation’s 56th Independence Day anniversary that though the country was not where it ought to be after 56 years of independence, he was optimistic it would surmount its challenges.
6. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele has thanked the Federal Government and security agencies for the quick rescue of his wife, Mrs Margaret Emefiele who was kidnapped few days back.
Emefiele in a statement by the Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Isaac Okorafor, confirmed that the CBN governor’s wife was rescued very late on Friday night and has since reunited with her family.
7. The Nigerian Army has released 348 detainees, held in connection with the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno state.
The ex-detainees were all handed over on Saturday to Governor Kashim Shettima in Maiduguri by Brig.-Gen. Victor Ezugwu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of the Nigerian Army.
8. The United States government may soon launch attacks against Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East, as a drone base being constructed in the Niger Republic would soon be completed.
According to reports, the American drone base is under construction in Agadez, a town in Niger and it is expected to offer US military, greater ability to use drones against Islamist extremists in countries like Libya, Mali and Nigeria.
9. No fewer than five tankers fully loaded with petroleum products were razed in a fire outbreak on Saturday morning at the Ekpan Tankers’ Park, near the Warri refinery in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
The inferno started when one of the tankers which had already lifted petroleum product from the Warri refinery developed a fault. Workers were loading the product into another tanker when danger struck.
10. The General Overseer of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Williams Kumuyi, has assured that the current economic woes of the country will soon be over.
The cleric, who gave the assurance during his sermon at a programme tagged ”Night of Supernatural Wonders” at the Abuja National Stadium on Friday, likened the current situation in the country to that of the children of Israel passing through the wilderness.
