Police officers have been deployed in the premises of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), following agitations for the removal of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Adebiyi Daramola, by labour unions.
According to a report on Premium Times, Daramola who was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, October 5, but later released, allegedly abused his office and mismanaged the school funds.
Police officers have been deployed to FUTA following agitations for the removal of the institution’s VC, Adebiyi Daramola, by labour unions.
However, the decision by the anti-graft agency to release Daramola has been greeted with extreme repugnance by the school unions, as they protested his release.
The workers, members of the Non Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the National Association of Academic Technologists, are demanding the prosecution of the VC and his removal as head of the institution.
But the police have moved to maintain law and order in the school premises as vehicles were on Monday, October 10 barred from entering into FUTA by armed policemen, as only the pedestrian gate was opened to visitors.
The Public Relations Officers of Ondo police, Femi Joseph, said the officers were asked to still remain at the entrance of the institution in order to avoid breakdown of law and order.
He said: “Our men are still there to maintain law and order and also to ensure that peace return to the school.
“It is the peace we are after that is why you saw those policemen there. But as soon as we are sure that peace has returned our men will leave the place.”
However, report has it that Daramola has started holding meetings with principal officers of the institution in a bid to resolve the impasse. He is also said to have stayed away from his office in the institution.
Following his arrest last week, Daramola was quizzed by the anti-graft agency, alongside the bursar, Emmanuel Oresegun, for alleged abuse of office and mismanagement of funds.
He was alleged to have drawn furniture allowance annually instead of once in four years as approved and paying himself housing allowance while residing in the University Vice Chancellor’s Quarters.
He was also alleged to have diverted funds from various unrelated subheads to finance other projects without the appropriate approvals.
