A bomb attack at a bus park on Wednesday left eight persons dead and 15 others injured in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The Senior Information Officer, National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Sani Datti, and the Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Command, Victor Izukwu, confirmed the attack, at the Muna Garage.Izukwu told one of our correspondents that an improvised explosive device was used in the attack, which occurred around 8:30am.
He said, “There was an IED explosion onboard a Golf motor vehicle with reg. No JERE 349 XA, body S/No RTEAN 7179 taxi colour carrying five passengers (four females and a male driver) by Muna along Maiduguri /Gamboru Ngala road.
“The explosion occurred when the taxi was attempting to join the convoy of other vehicles heading to Gamboru town.”
Datti on his part explained that those injured in the attack were rushed to different hospitals in the state.
He said, “About eight persons lost their lives, while 15 injured persons were evacuated to specialist and teaching hospitals in Maiduguri. Already, emergency workers have been deployed to the scene.”
The explosion at Muna Garage junction is coming barely 24 hours after some suspected members of Boko Haram invaded Kwashebe village, near the garage, killing five residents and injuring many others before looting foodstuff and livestock.
Sources at the Abuja headquarters of NEMA further stated that some members of the Police Anti-bomb Squad and other humanitarian agencies like the Borno State Emergency Management Agency also mobilised to the scene to assist victims of the blast.
