Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Thursday ambushed and killed two policemen along the Kagoro-Gidan Waya Road in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The gunmen, it was gathered, shot two other policemen who are said to be critically wounded.
It was also learnt that two of the six policemen who were manning the checkpoint where the incident occurred however escaped unhurt.
The Kaduna Police Command confirmed the incident.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Usman, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the policemen were ambushed and killed, while others were critically injured.
“Yes, gunmen killed two policemen. They were ambushed by the gunmen. Investigation into the matter has commenced,” Usman said.
The gunmen, it was gathered, made away with two AK47 rifles belonging to the victims.
The officers killed were of the rank of sergeant and, according to a source, were deployed to the area to check the activities of bandits who have been raiding the communities of recent.
The source said the injured policemen were rushed to the General Hospital, Kafanchan
According to the source, “The incident occurred this morning around 9:30am. Two policemen were killed by gunmen along Kagoro-Gidan Waya Road. We strongly believe they are Fulani herdsmen that have been killing people in our communities,” he said.
“In all, six policemen were at the checkpoint, two of them were killed and their AK47 rifles were taken away by the herdsmen.
“Others, about two of them, sustained serious injuries from gun shots, while the remaining two managed to escape unhurt.
“We took those that were wounded to the General Hospital Kafanchan. I understand that one of the dead policemen resumed duty here today. This is very sad and unfortunate.”
