ABUJA-FOR telling President Goodluck Jonathan to resign, the Presidency yesterday took a swipe at the opposition, describing such talks as devilish and ill motivated.
According to the Presidency, Nigerians were aware that nothing better could come from those behind the call, alleging that constitute the category of desperate politicians “who had lost focus and relevance, a reason they have been clinging to a plot to destabilise the country to reap from it” and coming from those it described as “agents of destabilization in Nigeria.”
In a statement yesterday by the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Professor Ahmed Rufai Alkali, he said, “The opposition is troubled while members contend with travails. They had better be advised to face their troubles and travails while leaving the President out of them.”
According to him, nothing less should be expected from “a group of discredited, directionless, selfish and desperate turn coats who pretend often to have the magic wand to brace Nigeria like never before.”
Alkali who noted that the opposition knew it had lost out in the modern day political race in Nigeria having divested itself of the grassroots support as a group so replete with disoriented managers and members with personality disorder, said that the only way the opposition could make up for its glaring shortcomings at this point in time, was to depend solely on propaganda with evil intents.
Professor Alkali who stressed that no right thinking Nigerian would ask a popularly elected President to resign based on cheap sentiment, more so at a time the rating of the President has kept soaring, said that President Jonathan has performed creditably in many areas, adding that “his ability to keep Nigeria united despite efforts by the enemies of government to plunge the country into a chaos of unimaginable proportion has made him the President of all times.
He said the God who installed Jonathan as Nigeria’s President has been a good pillar of support to him, a reason his government has been recording many firsts in diverse fields within less than four years of his Presidency, adding that “without a man as devoted, sincere, democratic, patriotic warn and intelligent President as Jonathan, Nigeria would have been in total darkness and burning, given the evil plots and ill-conceived desires of those he described as political saboteurs to pull the country down.”
The political adviser who urged Nigerians to appreciate the total devotion of President Jonathan to the task of keeping Nigeria together against the backdrop of security threats currently bedeviling it, said, “While we call on the opposition to stop the antics of rabble-rousing, buoyed by its willful and sustained casting of aspersions on President Jonathan, it is high time members were advised to face the multiple problems confronting them as a group.
“They should leave the President alone and begin to address the challenges that have portrayed them as strange bed fellows with irreconcilable differences and a group of politicians who had lost touch with the reality.
“President Jonathan has the mandate to conduct free and fair elections in 2015. His past exploits in election conduct speak volumes of his sincerity and preparedness to make the difference. If the opposition is desirous of making impact in 2015, it should leverage on the good template already set by the President by campaigning to win converts rather than holding on to the rueful plot of pulling down the man who means well for the country.
“Nigerians know the difference, and have been demonstrating overwhelming support for the President at every point in time. Such overwhelming support Nigerians have for the president cannot just be wished a way by any opposition, because the President worked hard to earn the love by Nigerians.”
