Calabar Port: Before Another Round of Endless Dredging

Latest reports on the jinxed Calabar Port channel dredging has it that the President, Muhammadu Buhari, has given approval for the dredging of the Calabar Port channel. He assured the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi who paid him a courtesy visit at the State House recently that the dredging of the channel would begin as soon as some legal issues are settled by the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) with the contractor.

With this assurance, one cannot but believe that another round of dredging of Calabar Port may soon be a reality. But in as much as stakeholders, especially shipping industry operators, and indeed, the entire nation would like to see the dredging of Calabar Port channel become a reality, ending more than two decades of controversial dredging of the channel, it is important that some other key issues are settled alongside the legal issues referred to by President Buhari.
