Evariste Ndayishimiye, the president-elect of Burundi has been sworn in as president. Evariste emerged as the winner of the May 20 elections as the country entered the post-Nkurunziza era.
Ndayimishiye was originally supposed to be sworn in August but the Constitutional Court ruled that the investiture be brought forward following the death of outgoing Nkurunziza.
The swearing in took place at the state Ingoma in Gitega, the political capital of the country. There were large crowds of people gathered as the new president took his oath.
The event was streamed live on Ntare Rushtashi House YouTube page. In attendance were diplomats who were trapped in the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The new president Ndayishimiye is a father of six children, he is a roman catholic, and he shares the view of an “emphasis on God” in politics as the late president.
