In the wake of the tensions in Mali the president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on Saturday made the decision to dissolve the constitutional court.
The courts decision to reverse the parliamentary election results earlier in the year has been the main trigger of the ongoing protests in Mali. Several protests have broken out across the country, escalating to violence and also recorded a number of fatalities.
The president said in an address said: “… I have decided to repeal the licences of the remaining members of the constitutional court and to move towards the implementation of the recommendations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).”
In addition to the cancellation of election results the country has for a long time experienced security challenges, widespread poverty, and conflict. This has angered and birthed clashes and protests demanding president Keita’s resignation.
