AT a time the Presidency, top security officials are breathing down on Nigerians and officials of the Nigeria Football Federation to retain Stephen Okechukwu Keshi as the chief coach of the Super Eagles, the man the Presidency is making a case for is in far away Equatorial Guinea negotiating to handle their national team.
Sports Vanguard can reveal authoritatively that Keshi who did not qualify the Super Eagles to the African Cup of Nations holding in Equatorial Guinea is lodged at the prestigious Hilton Hotel in Malabo as he negotiates with their Football chiefs on the possibility of his becoming the country’s national coach.
‘’Keshi is in Malabo and in Hilton Hotel. We’re holding talks to see if he will handle our national team’’, one of the FA officials in Equatorial Guinea said on our hotline yesterday.
But when contacted yesterday, NFF officials were ignorant of the whereabouts of the coach who was paid N14 million by the Sports Minister, Tammy Danagogo for not qualifying Nigeria to the African Cup of Nations which they are reigning champions.
‘’I don’t know where Keshi is. He is an adult and should be anywhere he wants to be’’, an official of the Nigeria Football Federation reacted angrily when called on phone to find out if they knew that the coach was looking for greener pastures.
Another NFF source did not believe that Keshi was negotiating with another country when there was an order from the Presidency as advised by Keshi’s friend that he should remain as coach of the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles finished third in its group behind South Africa and Congo who who advanced to the finals of the Nations Cup. They also were two points behind Democratic Republic of Congo who also qualified as the best third-place team.
The top two countries in seven groups, plus the best third-place finisher qualified for the finals along with host country, Equatorial Guinea.
