Mezra Interna2onal - Ms. Cidi Aliyu Commences Distribu2on of Solar Energy in Nigeria Entrepreneur & CEO, Mezra Interna9onal, Cidi Aliyu has shown interest in her willingness to partner with the federal government of Nigeria in the distribu9on of solar energy across the na9on, in what she termed her “Passion for Energy Law”. Ms. Cidi Aliyu (Mezra Interna9onal) is aware that the African con9nent is turning more and more to renewable energy technologies, and in par9cular for photovoltaics (PV), to strengthen energy security, reduce price vola9lity, guarantee access to electricity for all and sustainably strengthen rapid economic growth. With the opening of electricity produc9on and distribu9on segments to private operators and new price reduc9ons, solar PV (grid and off-grid solu9ons) now offers prompt and cost-effec9ve means to provide contemporary energy services to over 600 million Africans that have no access to electricity. Although Nigeria invests a lot of resources for a considerable expansion of the amount of electric power generated, the energy delivery infrastructure is insufficient to manage the country’s energy demand (considering a popula9on of more than 150 million, the largest on the African con9nent). Also, the high price paid for the energy supplied by the na9onal grid makes photovoltaic systems an excellent solu9on to solve the country’s energy crisis. A gradual shia from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources was launched with the plan called “Renewable Energy Master Plan (REMP)” launched in 2006. The project has set a target of 500 MWp for photovoltaic solar energy by 2025; and the program called “Energizing Access to Sustainable Energy (EASE)”, aims to improve the framework of renewable energies and energy efficiency. Cidi further sited that complexi9es of the poorest con9nent in the world appear when it comes to energy. Africa is rich in energy sources, supplying around 19% of the world’s produc9on of fossil fuels: a figure that contrasts with that of energy consump9on. African popula9ons consume only 3.2% of the world’s primary energy, which is the lowest per capita consump9on by con9nent. Also, the majority of African countries s9ll mainly use tradi9onal biomass to access primary energy. The gap between produc9on and consump9on is a good illustra9on of the colonial heritage of economies that depend on exports of natural resources. The most interes9ng example is that of uranium, of which Namibia and Niger are among the largest producers in the world. However, there are only two nuclear reactors currently in commercial opera9on in Africa, both located in South Africa. In 2014, half of the con9nent’s popula9on, which stands at 1.2 billion, do not have access to electricity. Nearly 730 million people used ineffec9ve and dangerous cooking methods, with most harmful effects on the health of households, in par9cular, that of women and children. Energy bills are expensive in certain regions; northern Nigeria, for example, has the highest electricity rates in the world per household, sixty to eighty 9mes more costly than in New York. When they exist, infrastructure is oaen in poor condi9on due to lack of adequate maintenance: thea of energy is not uncommon, as are illegal connec9ons to electrical networks. This move as she (Cidi) has planned will take some 9me before reaching all regions of the country, but ac9vi9es of installa9ons will kick off as soon as possible.
Cidi Aliyu (Mezra Interna2onal) To Commence Solar Energy Distribu2on In Cote D’Ivoire The energy capacity of Côte d’Ivoire will soon increase by 25 megawaQs. These will be produced by a photovoltaic power plant installed in Korhogo in the north of the country. A proposed act like this will be adopted by Nigeria’s Cidi Aliyu and the government to this effect. According to Ms. Cidi Aliyu, Côte d’Ivoire is gradually moving towards its objec9ve to reach an energy capacity of 4,000 megawaQs by 2023 with the share of renewable energies in its energy mix at 16%. To date, with the launch of the Soubré hydroelectric dam (southwest of the country, 365 km from Abidjan) built by China in 2017 and with a produc9on capacity of 275 megawaQs, the country stands at 2,000 megawaQs. A country of more than 26 million inhabitants, Côte d’Ivoire has set itself the objec9ve of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2030, mainly through the increase in the share of renewable energies in its energy mix. We take stock of the challenges and developments that should propel the country into a new energy era. According to figures from the University of Sherbrooke in Canada, electricity consump9on in Côte d’Ivoire has increased by 193% in 43 years, going from 94.35 kWh per person in 1971 to 276.15 kWh per person in 2014 It is also es9mated that in 2020, Ivorians should consume around 340 kWh on average per person per year. The “intelligence grid,” a march revolu9on by Cidi Aliyu - Mezra Interna9onal to achieve the objec9ves set in terms of renewable energies, a revolu9on of intelligent networks, as she stated, will soon take flight in Côte d’Ivoire. New technologies which should make it possible to take a significant energy step forward in the country with a revised budget of around 40 million euros will thus be allocated to this large-scale project. Electricity produc9on in Côte d’Ivoire reached 2,737.29 GWh in the first quarter of 2019, of which 67.55% came from thermal and 32.45% from hydraulic. The Azito thermal power plant located on the outskirts of Abidjan and provides a third of the country’s electricity produc9on has grown considerably in recent years. The associated investment is es9mated at around $60 million.
