The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has protested yesterday’s cover wrap-around advertisement in two national dailies placed by the Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, titled “Nigerians Be Warned!”
The party therefore alleged that the on-going campaigns on Buhari’s health, using forged medical reports, and now suggestions of death are reeking of plots to eliminate him before or after he wins the February 14 presidential election.
In separate statements by the director, media and publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Organization, Malam Garaba Shehu, while reacting to the advertisement in which Nigerians were asked to choose between life and death, grouping Buhari among former Nigerian leaders who were either killed or died of natural causes while in office, said it was the height of desperation by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Consequently, the campaign organisation has called for an international inquiry into the plot to kill Buhari because of the danger it poses to Nigeria’s unity and democracy and by extension the stability of the West African sub-region.
“Taken in its ordinary meaning, Garba said the APC alleged that the on-going campaign on Buhari’s health, using forged medical reports, and now suggestions of death are reeking of plots to eliminate him (Buhari)before or after he wins.
“The insinuation that the leader of Nigeria’s opposition should or may die ahead of the February 14 presidential polls is not only morbid and fatalistic, but drips of desperation and represents the pinnacle of political paranoia on the part of the incumbent government which has run out of favour with the populace after nearly six years of lackluster performance.
“This is the height of desperate tactics by the PDP, which is capable of degenerating into unnecessary bloodshed and destruction. They are choosing death for us. This is not politics.
We are therefore, asking our supporters to stay calm and be law-abiding.”
The Campaign Organization therefore advised President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP leadership to take charge of their campaigns for re-election before their surrogates plunge the nation into “confusion and anarchy”.
PDP Campaign remains issues-based – Metuh
When contacted over the matter, the PDP national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, said the PDP’s campaign remains issues-based while it expect all officials to comply with President Jonathan’s directive on the matter
He said, “We do hope that all concerned including the excesses by the APC should comply accordingly.”
Intolerance: Oyegun Report Gombe Gov, PDP To Jonathan
Meanwhile, 48 hours after the signing of the historic Abuja Accord on non-violent elections last week Wednesday involving leading presidential candidates of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Goodluck Jonathan and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammdu Buhari; the national chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun, has personally written a letter to Jonathan over alleged plans by the Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo and the PDP leadership in the state to stage-manage violent and deadly fracas which he said will be blamed on APC supporters.
In the 7-paragraph letter, dated January 16, 2015, titled “Notice of potential violation of agreement to avoid violence during elections” and obtained by LEADERSHIP yesterday, Oyegun told Jonathan that under the said plan by Dankwambo and the PDP, the APC leader in the state, Senator Danjuma Goje, would be arrested and detained along with other party stalwarts in order to weaken the party in the state ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
“The objective of this deliberately organised violence is to provide justification for the arrest and detention of APC party leaders particularly Senator Goje. This they believe will weaken the party as the leader, Senator Goje who is expected to give leadership to the APC during the elections will be kept out of circulation under the guise of police investigation.
“To this end therefore, we call on you to direct the appropriate agencies to investigate this report and put in place appropriate measures during political campaigns in the tate to prevent the actualisation of this evil plan,” Oyegun said.
He further added that as a law abiding and peace loving political party, APC is a signatory to the Abuja Accord and it is committed to sensitizing all its followers nationwide to respect the non-violence agreement entered into.
